This lap dog has the longest lifespan of any breed. Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog and will live for roughly 17 years. This dog is not prone to any serious genetic diseases or defects, which greatly helps their survival chances. The Chihuahua is the fourth most popular dog breed according to registrations with over 100,000 registered worldwide. This tiny dog will only ever weigh between three and six pounds.

The poodle is one of the most intelligent dog breeds and it is also one of the longest living with the toy breed of this dog. All versions of the poodle and poodle mixes tend to live for a longer than usual time for a dog breed, but the toy version will live for roughly 16 years. The toy poodle will only grow to be a little less than ten inches tall and will only weigh between five and ten pounds.

The Jack Russell Terrier is a high-energy dog that can live to be 16 years old! This breed is a little larger than its predecessors at roughly 13 to 14 inches when measured at the shoulder and can weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This athletic dog will be taking you on walks well into the back end of its lifespan.

Another poodle breed! This one is mixed with a cocker spaniel.  This version of the poodle can live a resounding 16 years on average! The cockapoo is very similar in size to the Jack Russell Terrier and has a very similar lifespan. They can grow up to about 15 inches when measured from the shoulder and can weigh anywhere between 12 and 24 pounds. This dog is very outgoing and friendly.

The Shih Tzu, famous for being the favorite dog of Chinese dynasties live on average of 15 years! The Shih Tzu is a toy breed of dog that is also hypoallergenic for those adopters who may be suffering from allergies. They can grow to only be about nine to ten inches tall when measured at the shoulder and will grow to between nine and 16 pounds for both the male and female version of the breed.  This lap dog simply just loves being a part of the family!
